Ria Formosa Natural Park offers 60 kilometers of protected coastline. It works well for children because the sandy barrier islands block the rough Atlantic waves. The lagoon waters average around 2 meters deep, creating a safe environment for younger swimmers.

Which island is best for kids in Ria Formosa?

Ilha de Tavira and Ilha da Armona offer the most family-friendly amenities.

Ilha da Armona has calm waters, a small village, and campsites. Ilha de Tavira features warm waters and the famous anchor graveyard at Praia do Barril. To reach Praia do Barril, families can ride a miniature train from Pedras d'El Rei, which is highly popular with young children.

Are the boat trips safe and comfortable for children?

Yes, the lagoon waters are calm and public ferries take just 15 to 30 minutes.

Public ferries run from Faro, Olhão, and Tavira. Tickets cost between €2 and €5 each way. For guided options, catamaran tours stay inside the protected channels. This means the water stays flat, reducing the risk of seasickness. Most tours last 2 to 4 hours.

Is the Ria Formosa visitor center good for families?
