Your best entry point depends on what you want to do. Faro and Olhão are ideal for boat tours and mainland trails. Tavira works best for accessing the eastern barrier islands. Choose your starting city based on your daily itinerary and transport options.
How to get to Ria Formosa from Faro
Start at the Faro Marina for boat tours, or head to the Ludo Trail near Faro Airport for land exploration.
Faro is the main transport hub for the western side of the park. You can walk or cycle the Ludo trail directly from the airport area. This flat trail takes 2 to 3 hours and is free to enter. If you prefer the water, head to Faro Marina. Public ferries and guided catamarans depart here daily for the barrier islands. Ferries take 15 to 30 minutes and cost between €2 and €5 each way.
Where to access the park in Olhão
Visit the Centro de Educação Ambiental de Marim (CEAM) for mainland trails, or the Olhão marina for island ferries.
Olhão sits in the center of the 60-kilometer lagoon system. It holds the park headquarters at Quinta de Marim. The CEAM visitor center here charges roughly €3 for entry. You will find a 3-kilometer nature trail through salt flats and pine forests. From the Olhão marina, you can catch ferries or guided eco-solar boats to Ilha da Culatra and Ilha da Armona. A drive from Faro to Olhão takes about 15 minutes.

How to visit Ria Formosa from Tavira
Take a public ferry from Tavira to access the eastern barrier islands.
Tavira provides the best access to the eastern section of the park. Ferries depart from the town center or Quatro Águas directly to Ilha de Tavira. If you visit Praia do Barril on Ilha de Tavira, you can park at Pedras d'El Rei. From there, you cross a footbridge and take a miniature train to the beach. Tavira is ideal for beachgoers wanting warm, calm waters.
What is the best way to travel around Ria Formosa?
Boats are best for the islands, while walking and driving are best for the mainland marshes.
The lagoon system limits land access to the barrier islands. You must use a boat to reach Ilha Deserta, Culatra, and Armona. Public ferries run year-round, but schedules increase during summer. Guided boat tours navigate shallow channels and stop at multiple islands. On the mainland, you can drive to trailheads like Ludo or CEAM, where parking is mostly free.
