Marshes and Mainland Trails

Explore the wetlands, salt pans, and pine forests that border the mainland side of Ria Formosa.

While the barrier islands protect the lagoon, the mainland marshes hold the majority of the birdlife. The shallow waters here average 2 meters deep, constantly shifting with the tides. Walk these flat trails to spot flamingos, spoonbills, and purple swamphens.

You must stick to designated trails and boardwalks to protect the vegetation. Spring and autumn offer the best conditions for birdwatching and hiking across the 18,400-hectare park.
