Barrier Islands (Ilhas-Barreira)

Five sandy barrier islands protect the Ria Formosa lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean.

These islands shelter the inner marshes and salt pans from ocean currents. You can reach the islands by public ferries departing from Faro, Olhão, and Tavira. Ferries cost between €2 and €5 each way.

Schedules run year-round but increase in frequency during the summer months. General access to the barrier islands is free, though specific protected zones forbid entry to preserve bird habitats.
