About Ria Formosa Natural Park
Ria Formosa is a vast coastal lagoon system protecting the southeastern Algarve coast. A chain of sandy barrier islands shelters a labyrinth of salt pans and freshwater lagoons from the Atlantic Ocean. You can explore Barrier Islands like Ilha Deserta and Ilha da Armona.
The park is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. It protects over 1,500 species of flora and fauna. This includes one of the highest densities of seahorses globally and rare birds like the purple swamphen. Learn more about where to spot wildlife in our guide to Spotting Flamingos.
Visitors can access the park by public ferry, guided boat tour, or on foot. Land-based routes like the Ludo trail offer excellent opportunities to photograph the salt flats up close. Read about Access Points Guide to choose your starting point.
